Justine Graham (1976, France | USA) works and lives in Santiago, Chile since 2005. Visual artist, cultural producer, and editorial art director, she is the founding director of creative lab YAPO Project, and is Adjunct Professor of photography at the School of Design, Universidad Católica de Chile. Through play, choreographic interpretation of text and editorial book design, Justine Graham probes into the boundless functions and ambiguities of photographic representation in order to understand the world around us. She explores photography as a tool for conceptual research to subvert assumptions, break down hierarchies, and connect people with one another across perceived differences.
Her practice recurs to strategies of collecting and archiving -from objects to people- in order to divulge intangible social dynamics such as creativity, political narratives, networks, loss, and labor relations.
The principal areas of her practice she explores -both individually and jointly- include: the relationship of image ignited by text, portraiture, and participatory photography.
Borrowing from photography's ample spectrum of established genres, whether street photography, studio portraiture, 19th century cyanotype prints, flash photography or online imagery she experiments with the medium's ability to record and amass, in order to question stereotypes and magnify ignored realities.
A través del juego, la interpretación coreográfica de texto y el diseño editorial de libros, Justine Graham indaga en las ilimitadas funciones y ambigüedades de la representación fotográfica para entender el mundo que nos rodea. Explora la fotografía como herramienta de investigación conceptual para subvertir suposiciones, romper jerarquías y conectar a las personas entre sí más allá de las diferencias percibidas.
Su práctica recurre a estrategias de recopilación y archivo -de objetos a personas- para divulgar dinámicas sociales intangibles como la creatividad, las narrativas políticas, las redes, el duelo y las relaciones laborales.
Las principales áreas de su práctica que explora -tanto individual como conjuntamente- incluyen: la relación de la imagen encendida por el texto, el retrato y la fotografía participativa.
Tomando prestado el amplio espectro de géneros establecidos de la fotografía, ya sea la fotografía callejera, el retrato de estudio, las impresiones de cianotipos del siglo XIX, fotografía con flash o imagenes online, experimenta con la capacidad del medio para registrar y acumular, con el fin de cuestionar los estereotipos y magnificar las realidades ignoradas.
